Perry’s connection to cars runs deep, but nothing compares to his lifelong bond with his beloved 1953 Ford Customline. He’s owned it since he was 16, and after more than five decades of moves, storage, dents, cows, (COWS!), and even falling tree limbs, the car is finally getting the restoration it deserves. And in a twist that stunned everyone, Perry recently found a donor car in the exact same color and model right here in Minnesota. He still has the photo he took of the Ford at age 16 in 1973. Now, with a pristine donor body ready to go, Perry has the glass, the trim, the panels, and the dream lined up. The engine is already refreshed with barely 100 miles on it. 2026 is meant to be the year the legend rolls again.Born and raised in small-town Minnesota (but “not on a farm!”), Perry eventually made his way to the Twin Cities. A former engineering and shop teacher turned home-remodeling contractor, he’s just as comfortable talking about chrome trim as he is about drywall.Perry joined the club in 2021 thanks to longtime friends Jeff and Gale, who have known him for over 30 years. And like many of our members, his garage tells a story:
1953 Ford Customline – His first car, a lifelong companion now embarking on a full, faithful restoration. 2002 Ford Ranger – Fresh from the body shop after a scrape. 2005 Lexus – His sometimes-loaner, currently out helping a friend. 2007 Chrysler Town & Country – The contractor’s Swiss Army knife; hauls tools, plywood, drywall, and seven contractors or friends when needed. His second car, a Rambler with seats that folded flat (“exactly what every 17-year-old needs!”), carried friends, siblings, and even his brother’s whole football team. His coolest car? An ’83 Camaro Berlinetta with T-tops, gold decals, and only eight miles on it when he bought it new for his 25th birthday.Perry’s dream cars? Think classic elegance: Auburn, Duesenberg, Cord, Bugatti, gleaming machines of the ’30s and ’40s.As for the club, Perry’s commitment speaks volumes: he has personally purchased seven memberships to help new people get involved. “You feel welcomed. You belong here,” he says, and he means it.And no Great Northern Region spotlight would be complete without a joke. He shared a multigenerational Ole & Lena story passed down through his mother’s bridge club… and let’s just say the punchline brought the room to tears (of laughter and maybe a little shock).Perry, we can’t wait to see that ’53 Ford back on the road. Thanks for bringing generosity, joy, and one unforgettable restoration story to our club. 🚗✨

The first vehicle he learned to drive? A rusted-out 1979 Chevy LUV with a stick shift and a leaky cab. After being cleared to drive to school, he borrowed his grandma’s Buick LeSabre while she was wintering in California. He drove it with a farm permit and a trunk full of loose bolts to "make it legal." Imagine the horror when a sleet storm swept the area, resulting in a schoolmate wiping out and sideswiping the Buick in the school parking lot.
Don’t worry, grandma never found out, but Tim and his father worked feverishly those winter months to make sure the repairs were done before grandma’s return. Wow!
Tim officially joined the club in 2024, drawn by a shared love of cars and community. “It’s a good group of folks. The camaraderie, the humor… it’s been great just connecting with people who get it.”
Tim’s collection today includes four vehicles: 2012 Cadillac CTS Coupe – Kept at the farm and fired up for a drive or two in the summer. 2019 Corvette C7 – His current pride and joy. 2020 Chevy Tahoe – His go-to for winter driving. 2022 Cadillac CT4 – His daily driver.
His very first car was an '87 Pontiac Grand Am pulled from a junkyard, totaled three times, resurrected twice, and eventually sold to a private investigator who drove it for another 100,000 miles. “We thought it was dead. It wasn’t!”
Dream car? “I'm kind of a Corvette fanatic,” he joked. Take it from us, he’s really happy with his current Corvette!
Tim’s sense of humor is as sharp as his driving. When asked if he had a favorite joke, he grinned and shared this wink to the 90’s… an edgy political meme questioning the number of individuals in the picture.
Welcome, Tim! You fit right in. 🚗✨

- 1923 Durant – A family heirloom, restored by his grandfather, passed down through generations, and now in Adam’s care.
- 1928 Ford Model A – Once part of a road trip from South Dakota to Florida with his grandfather when Adam was eight years old.
- 1988 Pontiac Trans Am – His near-Knight Rider dream car (with a loving compromise from his husband).
“People here are genuinely friendly. I’ve been in other car clubs where I didn’t feel welcome, but this one is different.”Even his husband’s Cadillac Lyriq fits in just fine. And if you ask Adam for a joke, you’d better brace yourself. He’s got a few dad jokes queued up:
- Why can’t a bicycle stand up on its own? It’s two-tired.
- Why did the banker quit their job? They lost interest.
- And our favorite: A snail buys a car and tells the dealer to paint an “S” on every door. When asked why, he replies, “So when I drive by, people say, ‘Look at that Escargo!’”

“Everybody’s been very welcoming. I’ve had so much fun at the events I’ve attended. I love looking at the older cars and hearing the stories, even if I don’t know what’s under the hood.”Outside the club, Reed takes on big challenges for good causes—like riding 150 miles in the MS150 bike ride from Duluth to White Bear Lake to raise funds for multiple sclerosis research. (We’re cheering for you, Reed!) Ask him about his parent's 1972 Chrysler New Yorker. “That car was a boat—you could fit five in the back seat and probably more in the trunk. My dad used to say, ‘I don’t care who’s driving it, because if they hit someone, that person’s gone—but everyone inside the Chrysler is fine.’” We’ll also let you in on a secret: only two people besides Reed have ever driven the Solstice. We asked if that included Victor (his partner), and it sounds like he might’ve moved it out of the garage once—to get the lawnmower. 🙂 Reed reminds us that knowledge of engines isn’t required—only the love of cars and connection.

LeAnn joined the Great Northern Region in search of community, new friendships, and of course—to look at cool cars! It’s safe to say she found all three.
What stands out most to her?
“I like the fact that the club is so welcoming to all.”
Last year’s Cinco de Carro event quickly became a favorite, thanks to its fun blend of vintage vehicles, antiques, and strong coffee. Whether it's sharing laughs or admiring chrome bumpers, LeAnn is all in.
Her beloved 1997 Pontiac Grand Am isn’t just a car—it’s a survivor, a friend, and a whole lot of fun.
And she wants newcomers to know:
“You don’t have to own a collector’s vehicle to be a part of the club.”
Oh—and while she couldn’t pick a favorite joke, LeAnn’s comedic sensibilities are fully in tune with 90s and 2000s SNL.
From her retro rides to her welcoming spirit, LeAnn is exactly what makes our club special.

Here’s what Randy has to say about his experience so far:
“I joined to connect with other LGBTQ+ automotive enthusiasts and to be a part of a club where we could share ideas, knowledge, and enjoyment of our vehicles”.
“Our connectivity and mutual respect are what I enjoy the most from the club. The camaraderie has been great for the past several years”.

Bob
Member Since 2020
Bob joined the Great Northern Region, driven by his love of cars and a desire to connect with like-minded enthusiasts.
“I joined the club to meet fellow members who share my interest in cars. It’s open to men, women, straight, gay, and people of all ages. That’s what I like most about it.”
Bob’s pride and joy is his sleek, sexy, and elegant 1983 Cadillac Eldorado.
Asked what Bob wants others to know about the club, Bob said, “We’re so welcoming to new members. For me, the Great Northern Region isn’t just about cars—it’s about the people and the connections that make the journey unforgettable.”

Annette
Member Since 2023
Annette’s journey with the Great Northern Region began when her friend, Robin, called her up and said, “By the way, you’re a Lambda member.” Unsure at first—she didn’t have a classic car—Annette quickly discovered the club wasn’t just about the cars but about the people and the community. Grateful for Robin’s nudge, she says, “I DO LOVE cars, though!” Annette’s daily drive, a decked-out VW Atlas, is a testament to her car enthusiasm.
What Annette loves most about the club is “everything.” From seeing personalities matched to cars to the unique excursions and events, she appreciates the club’s variety and warmth. “Some call me a car snob, which is true but untrue—it’s not about the make or model as much as ‘that thing’ about each one.”
Her favorite event? The Twin Cities Pride Parade. “Waving to everyone satisfies my ‘Queen,’ but there is so much joy all around,” Annette shares. For her, it’s a perfect celebration of pride, visibility, and connection.

Sean

After moving to the Twin Cities, Sean was eager to connect with like-minded car enthusiasts.
Here’s what Sean says about his experience:
“As a newcomer to the Twin Cities and the collector vehicle community, I was excited to meet fellow LGBTQ car enthusiasts. The Great Northern Region has exceeded my expectations with its welcoming vibe, knowledge sharing, and great events. So far, Vino in the Valley is my favorite of the year!”
Sean has also stepped up to join our Board of Directors and manages all our social media, keeping the club top of mind for everyone online. Big thanks to him!

Earl joined the Great Northern Region in 2018.
In his own words, "I had a couple classics but never really found a place where I felt like I fit in and was welcomed until stumbling upon this club by searching for gay car clubs. Who knew there was one in Minnesota?!"
In terms of his favorite thing about the club, "Each event is different - and I guess that is what appeals to me. Road trips, car shows, social hang outs, friendships in the making. So great!"

Glenn
Member Since {Redacted}
Glenn has been a member of the Great Northern Region for over 20 years (GASP!) through a couple incarnations of the local chapter.
We caught up with him to find out why he joined. In his own words, " I'm obsessed with cars- the style and design tho rather than the mechanics-and LCCI seemed like a fun place to share those interests with others with a similar lifestyle."
For those who may not know (*ahem*) Glenn was, for a long-time, President of our chapter, and we hardly believe him as he says his favorite thing about the club is "the board members, especially the prez".
Our theory, which Glenn unofficially confirmed, he loves the social interaction. Although cars are the common bond in the club, having a fun time whether on road trips, at car shows, or at member-hosted events is what makes us successful.

Barry
Member Since 2021
When we caught up with Barry to ask why he joined, he said, "to meet car enthusiasts and do like minded fun car related excursions." For those of you who know Barry, he's being coy. This author thinks there may be ulterior motives such as meeting dignitaries and exercising his powers of observation and innuendo.
What holds Barry's interest? "I enjoy sharing knowledge about cars and leaning from other car collectors about their cars. I particularly like the diversity of collector cars and the fun dynamics of the members."

Jeff
Member Since 2017
Jeff joined the Great Northern Region in 2017.
We asked Jeff why he joined. "Being a classic car owner, and a gay man, I found the idea of attending local car shows were boring. I needed to find people similar to me who also had the love of classic cars. Cars from the 70's and 80's are my favorite."
Jeff's take on why join our car club... "I so much enjoy meeting new people, people of similar taste of cars, being surrounded by other gay men who love cars! (ok looking at "eye candy" at car events is great too!) The group is a great source of knowledge of where to have your car worked on, where to get parts, who knows where to go for questions on your car. I enjoy the "roadtrips" we do as a group."

Chris

We asked him about why he joined and his experience with the club.
"I have always loved cars. My matchbox collection probably started it, and why I don’t have them today I really couldn’t tell you. About a year ago I decided to buy myself a new adult sized toy. I am always intrigued by a car's design regardless of year, make or model. And now classic cars include the ones from MY childhood!
Being at a point in my life where I am ready for new adventures, finding a club like this was a wonderful surprise, I was welcomed so kindly, and learned it really is a small world."

Robin
Member Since 2018
Robin joined the Great Northern Region in 2018. He was introduced to the club by his best friends - having not been aware of it before.
What Robin likes best about the club? "Getting together and meeting people with common interests. Participating in events when I can. Sizzling summer nights is probably my favorite because I host that event and it’s always great fun and a great show."

Bob

We caught up with him to talk about why he joined. Bob shared, "I've known many of the members for several years but was always busy with my signing groups. That changed with the pandemic, and I found myself with time to explore other interests. I attended a club driving event as a guest and was immediately taken by how welcoming and friendly everyone was. I grew up in a family that always had old cars around as my Dad fixed them up and sold them for extra cash. As kids we played a game while driving at night of who could tell what a car was based solely on its headlights or taillights. Not as easy to do nowadays, but I still make guesses to myself."
Maybe we should do a Headlight / Taillight series of posts!
We asked Bob what his favorite thing about the club was... "Hanging out and spending time with other gay men that enjoy cars. And of course, I love the drives!"
